AN ICON, EXPLAINED

One black toe.
A fashion revolution.

Gabrielle Chanel created the two-tone slingback with Paris shoemaker Massaro. Beige visually lengthened the leg; black refined the foot and protected the toe. An idea both beautiful and brilliantly practical.

THE ORIGINAL IDEA

A study in proportion.

Beige extends the leg. A dark toe sharpens the silhouette. The resulting balance has stayed recognisable for generations.
